Local High School Cross Country
This is the one-stop-shop for everything that you want to know about Southeast Missouri’s
High School Cross-Country programs.

Check back often as we make weekly updates to information such as Coaching Staff, Team
rosters (varsity/JV), schedules, and more! We’ll also have interviews with athletes, coaches,
and fans!

Check out our
“Athlete of the Week”. This is a weekly honor to the High School Cross-
Country runner who demonstrates that extra “something”. At season’s end, we will announce
our pick for “SplitMaster’s Cross-Country Runner of the Year”, and “SplitMaster’s Cross
Country Coach of the Year”.

Why are we doing this?
#1: To draw attention to the Cross-country programs in Southeast Missouri.
#2: To encourage and give positive feed back to the individual runners and the
programs as a whole.
#3: To inform the local fan base and encourage outside support.
SplitMaster’s Athlete of the Week:  August 10, 2009

“I’ve trained my hardest to be ready for the Cross-Country Season” – Brandon Shemonia

We have proudly selected Brandon Shemonia, of Scott City High School, as SplitMaster’s first Athlete of
the Week.  Brandon has received this honor partially due to his recent PR performances at the AAU
Junior Olympic Games earlier this month.

At this National Amateur Competition, Brandon finished with a 3 second PR in the 1500 (24th place
overall, 4:22) and a 7 second PR in the 3000 (11th place overall 9:43).

Although he has already competed at the national level, Brandon is new to the sport of Cross-Country.
As a sophomore, this will be his first year competing as part of a High School Cross-Country team.  He
shares his coach’s goal of taking at least a few Scott City Rams all the way to the state meet this year.
While he claims to have a little natural talent, Brandon is relying on his summer training and dedication to
ensure that he can reach this goal.

When asked about his long-term goals, Brandon replied, “I just want to keep dropping my times!”  He
went on to describe his goals of someday becoming a state champion, running at HS nationals and at the
collegiate level for Florida State.  “If I keep running, you never know what can happen.  I’m willing to do the
work!”

For now, Brandon is anxious to compete in his first meet in Jackson on Sept. 5th.  After expressing his
hopes of finishing in the top 10 at this meet, I asked Brandon why he doesn’t believe that he could have a
podium finish.  That’s when I saw his humble side, “There are a lot of great runners who will be there.  Billy
(Leighton), Roy (Leighton), and Cody Kern, as well as others, will all be there.”

SplitMaster Wishes Brandon Shemonia the best!  Keep on Running!!

A new Cross Country Program has been born! Scott City High School will begin a Cross Country program
under the direction of Coach Travis Schiwitz.  Coach Schiwitz was part of the Kelly High School Cross
Country Program 1994-1996 (Coached by Bill Davis, now Notre Dame’s head C-C coach). After High
School, Schiwitz ran for Southeast Missouri State University. We look forward to watching this new team
develop and grow!
